July 10 & 11, 2010
There's just something about horses that
attract a lot of attention. You can watch a demonstration of the literal "Work Horse" from
years gone by and get a taste of what the early settlers of Southern Alberta did to
make a living. It’s not until you’ve seen horses plow a field that you realize
just how much strength that these versatile animals have. They are nothing short of
a joy to see.
The Horse Power weekend event will give you a front row seat for all the action.
You can talk to our knowledgeable volunteers and perhaps find out how to hitch
two horses together, or how to plow a straight line, or anything else that
intrigues you.
If that isn't enough,
maybe burning coal, red-hot iron, and the smell of freshly cut wood will spark an interest in
fashioning something useful from raw materials. You might see how to make a
horseshoe from a straight iron bar. Or find out how to make a knife blade
or a pair of tongs.
This is the quintessential
weekend for people who love work-horses and all the equipment that goes with
them.
In 2010, this weekend also coincides with Sports Day in the town of Irricana. We
are going to try to run a horse-drawn wagon between the town's Sports Day events
and Pioneer Acres. You can find more information on what's happening in Irricana
by going to their website at
www.irricana.com
and looking under Visitor Information.
